1) What was it like playing such an important role as an actor with a disability?

First of all, I would like to thank Director Soho for casting me - as I never dreamed I would get the chance to make a cinematic comeback after the accident on my first movie set made me a paraplegic and shattered my dreams of being an actor. From the audition to the casting and the moment of filming, everything felt like destiny to me, just like the title of our movie. I felt a lot of pressure because I was given an important role in this movie, but I thought of it as my mission to improve the public’s perception of the disabled and did my best. It was a truly refreshing and exciting experience for me. It was a valuable experience that reminded me that nothing is impossible, and that I should look at the world more positively and take on challenges. I would like to once again thank Director Soho for giving me this valuable experience and opportunity.

우선 저를 캐스팅해 주신 소호 감독님께 감사드립니다. 첫 촬영장에서의 불의의 사고로 하반신 마비가 되어 배우의 꿈을 포기했고, 다시는 배우가 될 수 있을 거라고 꿈에도 생각하지 못했거든요. 오디션부터 캐스팅 그리고 촬영의 순간까지 모든 것들이 저에게는 우리 영화의 제목처럼 운명으로 다가왔습니다. 이번 영화에서 중요한 역할을 맡게되어 마음의 부담감은 컸지만 대중들에게 장애인에 대한 인식을 개선하는 저의 사명이라 생각하고 최선을 다했습니다. 저에게는 정말로 신선하고 가슴뛰는 경험이었습니다. 앞으로 더 긍정적으로 세상을 바라보고 도전하며 "불가능은 없다."는 말을 일깨워준 소중한 경험이었습니다. 저에게 이런 경험과 기회를 준 소호 감독님께 다시 한번 감사드립니다.

2) Why is this film important for Korea?

The reason why this film is important to be released in Korea is because it is the first K-pop film directed by a foreign director. The dark side of the magnificent and wonderful stage behind the K-pop that is gaining explosive popularity worldwide has been realistically captured on camera from a foreigner’s perspective. And the actors’ wise overcoming of such dark realities with the power of positivity will be a new experience for Korean audiences.

이번 영화가 한국에서 개봉이 중요한 이유는 외국인 감독이 제작한 첫 k-pop 영화이기 때문입니다. 전세계적으로 선풍적인 인기를 끌고 있는 k-pop이 보여주는 웅장하고 멋진 무대 뒤의 또 다른 어두운 이면들을 외국인이 바라보는 관점에서 현실감있게 카메라에 담아냈습니다. 그리고 그런 어두운 현실들을 긍정의 힘으로 슬기롭게 극복하는 배우들의 모습들도 한국의 관객들에게는 새로운 경험으로 다가 갈 것입니다.

3) What was it like working with SoHo?

Every moment of working with Director Soho was a series of fun surprises. We discussed our opinions on our film comfortably and freely as friends, rather than as a director and actor. As a result, I think we were able to capture better lines and images on camera. On set, the director’s meticulous consideration and kindness for disabled actors helped me focus more stably on my acting. I was also deeply impressed by the director’s direct acting guidance after every scene, monitoring it together.

소호 감독님과 함께 작업하는 모든 순간들이 놀라움의 연속이었습니다. 감독과 배우의 상하 관계가 아닌 마치 친구처럼 편안하고 자유롭게 우리 영화에 대한 의견들을 토론하고 좋은 생각들을 함께 공유했습니다. 그 결과 더 좋은 대사와 영상들을 카메라에 담을 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 촬영장에서도 감독님의 장애인 배우에 대한 세심한 배려와 자상함이 제가 연기를 하는데 있어 더 안정감 있게 집중 할 수 있도록 이끌어 주었습니다. 모든 씬마다 촬영후 모니터링을 함께하며 직접 연기 지도를 해주는 감독님의 모습 또한 깊은 감명을 받았습니다.

4) Why do you feel people in Korea and worldwide will be inspired by this film?

It seems that conflicts and disputes between countries are intensifying around the world. I think the best way to calm these situations and create synergy is cultural diplomacy. I hope that people from all over the world, including Korea, will watch our film and be inspired by cultural and artistic exchanges that can lead to friendly directions between countries. Racial discrimination, sexism, ageism, alcoholism, and discrimination against the disabled are serious problems that all countries face. Since our film has successfully captured the entire process of overcoming and resolving these problems, I believe it will be able to deliver a message of positivity and hope to the audience and have a positive influence.

현재 전 세계적으로 국가간 갈등과 분쟁이 치열해지고 있는 것 같습니다. 이러한 상황들을 진정시키고 시너지 효과를 낼 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은 문화외교라고 생각을 합니다. 국가간 우호적인 방향을 이끌 수 있는 문화,예술 교류를 통해 한국을 포함한 전세계 사람들이 우리 영화를 보고 좋은 영감을 받았으면 합니다. 인종차별, 성차별, 연령차별, 알콜중독 그리고 장애인에 대한 차별 등은 모든 국가가 가지고 있는 심각한 문제입니다. 우리 영화는 이러한 문제들을 잘 극복하고 해결하는 모든 과정을 잘 담아냈기 때문에 관객들에게 긍정과 희망의 메세지를 전달하고 분명 선한 영향력을 펼칠 수 있을 것이라고 생각합니다.

5) Any other comments on the project and your experience?

I hope that in the future, like our project, there will be many contents that can be a great motivation for the socially disadvantaged and the public. In the past, contents framed them as socially disadvantaged, and the public only perceived them as pitiful and needy beings. This was the only way to increase viewership and interest from the public. However, as times change, awareness of the socially disadvantaged is improving a lot these days. I hope that this kind of content that contains the images of the socially disadvantaged that give benefit and hope to the public will be widely known.

저희 프로젝트처럼 앞으로도 사회적 약자들과 대중들에게 큰 동기부여가 될 수 있는 컨텐츠들이 많이 제작되었으면 좋겠습니다. 과거의 컨텐츠들은 그들에게 사회적 약자라는 프레임을 씌워 대중들에게 불쌍하고 도움이 필요한 존재로만 인식되어 왔습니다. 그렇게 연출을 해야만 시청률을 높일 수 있었고 대중들이 관심을 가졌기때문입니다. 하지만 시대가 변화함에 따라 이제는 장애인에 대한 인식이 많이 개선되고 있는 요즘입니다. 대중들에게 유익함과 희망을 주는 그들의 모습들을 영상에 담은 이러한 컨텐츠 제작을 많이해서 널리 알려졌으면 좋겠습니다.
